School Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) and Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) are closely connected to learners’ health, dignity, comfort, attendance, participation and learning. Safe drinking water, clean and usable toilets, handwashing with soap, privacy, menstrual support, safe waste arrangements and respectful behaviour together create a healthy and inclusive school environment.
WaSH and MHM should therefore not be treated as separate concerns. A learner managing menstruation also needs water, a private and usable toilet, soap, a suitable menstrual material, a safe way to dispose of or manage used materials, time to manage the situation, and a supportive adult response.
